The fifty-six Minor Arcana cards split into four suits of fourteen. If the Major Arcana speaks of great turning points, the Minor speaks of daily life — and the four suits are four domains of that life.
Four suits, four domains
- Wands — fire. Will, passion, action, inspiration. When Wands cluster, the story turns on what you want to do, your energy and drive.
- Cups — water. Emotion, love, relationships, intuition. Cups touch the heart: affection, attachment, hurt, healing.
- Swords — air. Thought, words, truth, conflict. Swords are the realm of the mind — both clarity and the loops of thinking that trap us.
- Pentacles — earth. Body, work, money, concrete things. Pentacles speak of material ground and the feeling of security.
Numbers tell a story too
Within each suit the numbers follow a rising rhythm: the Ace is a seed, Two–Three first steps, Four–Five–Six mid-journey tests and adjustments, Seven–Eight–Nine depth and effort, Ten a full cycle. Meeting a card, you can ask two questions: which domain does this suit belong to? and where on the journey is this number?
Using it in a reading
Notice which suit dominates a spread. Many Cups suggest a matter of the heart; many Swords, a strained mind; many Pentacles, very real concerns; many Wands, energy wanting to move. The absence of a suit also says something — perhaps a domain you’ve been neglecting.
The four suits aren’t there to sort your fate, but to help you notice: is what’s happening a matter of the heart, the mind, the hands, or the fire within?
